Friends

Would you work for free?

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 15, 2013, 8:00 PM

I read an interesting article regarding freelancing recently that got me pondering. The interaction occurred among journalists, but it also applies to all creative mediums. Freelance writer Nate Thayer was asked by The Atlantic to write a blog post for free. The initial correspondence letter said "We unfortunately can't pay you for it, but we do reach 13 million readers a month," said the editor in her email to Thayer. He firmly replied "I am a professional journalist who has made my living by writing for 25 years and am not in the habit of giving my services for free to media outlets so they can make money by using my work and efforts by removing my ability to pay my bills and feed my children. Frankly, I will refrain from being insulted and I am perplexed how one can expect to try to retain quality professional services without paying for them." I read that with a big grin, because I wholeheartedly agree.

Would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street? I have lost track of how many times someone has approached me and asked if they could use my work for free. They always use the same tired excuse too - something along the lines of "I can't pay you, but it would be a good reference..." That is absolutely insulting. That is not a "great opportunity." That is pure exploitation.

This happens way too often to all artists of all mediums - illustrators, graphic designers, photographers, web developers, etc. Every amateur can use some experience, but that does not mean one should give their hard work away for free. Your art is a contribution to society. Being paid allows you to make that contribution to society. If anyone ever tries to pull this crap on you, be firm and stand your ground.

I just got back from vacation. Here is one of my favorite shots from my trip.

Thanks for spreading love!

Disney Vacation Club
Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort is located on the picturesque coast of South Carolina. Although I've visited the island many times, I always find a new spot to shoot. There are miles of unspoiled beaches, trails, and paths.

I hope you like it! Anyone care to critique?

Barred Owl by KrisVlad
Barred Owl
This is Homer, my local zoo's Barred Owl. He's super chill.

Perched in a tree, the barred owl scans the forest floor for small creatures. Large, forward-facing eyes equip the owl with exceptional vision and an acute ability to judge distances. Soft, fringed feathers silent the owl’s flight as it swoops down to catch its unsuspecting prey.

Scops Owl
This is Gizmo! He's teeny tiny and adorable.

Northern White Face Scops Owls are medium sized owls with prominent ear tufts and white faces, edged with black. They have a mostly gray body, marked with black and underneath a paler gray with black streaks. They have fine vermiculations on their underside which are wavelike markings. They have bright orange eyes. They have a height of 7-10” and weigh between 6-7oz.

Thunder And Lightning by KrisVlad

What have you been up to?
I just moved to a new neighborhood and I discovered this park with a crazy view!
Hopefully, I can catch some more action there.

How are you doing?
Thunder And Lightning by KrisVlad
Thunder And Lightning
It's tornado season, and my city is getting the storm remnants. I watched this thunder and lightning roll in from the outskirts of Devou Park. I kept trying to time the shots, but I kept failing. Capturing the lightning required continuously shooting in burst mode. After 400+ exposures, I finally caught a strike!

I hope you like it.

"Start Creating Your World Instead Of Letting The World Create You." -Bryant McGill

Everyone has a different view of what the world looks like to them. Some view it as great, some bad, etc. This quote that I found really reflects on that. Please send this to your friends as well as the person who sent it to you. This will put a smile on someone's face today :) (Smile)
